The winter months of November and December are traditionally festive
and eventful, with twinkling lights, families returning home for the
holidays, and mouth-watering meals everywhere you turn. Unfortunately,
statistics also show that home fires and electrical accidents increase
during these months.
To reduce the risk of a home fire, follow these simple steps:
- Never leave food unattended on a stove and turn off burners if you have to leave the room.
- Keep towels, pot holders and napkins away from hot surfaces
- With greater activity comes an increase in energy use, so be careful not to overburden your electrical system.
- Keep space heaters out of high-traffic areas and at least three feet from any flammable materials.
- Turn off space heaters when you leave or go to sleep. Never leave space heaters unattended.
In addition, plan for fire emergencies before they
happen. If you do not have a family fire escape plan, make one now and
ensure everyone in the family understands what to do in the event of a
fire. If you already have one, make sure and tell any overnight guests
so that they know what to do in an emergency.
